Jóvenes en Acción

Bringing Y-PLAN to Latin American Youth

Global Seed and CC&S, working with Ayusa International and the US embassy in Mexico City, founded the Jóvenes en Acción (Youth in Action) Program with the sponsorship of the US Department of State. The intention of the program was to “… empower participants with an increased sense of their own capacity to achieve personal success and to serve as leaders of their communities,” especially in response to incidents of violence. It was also meant to expose them to the United States, fostering personal connections and cultural appreciation. The students were given growth opportunities through a mixture of in-classroom work, wherein students worked through the Y-PLAN roadmap, along with cultural exchange activities and events planned by Global Seed, where they explored alongside local high schoolers and college students, who served as mentors.

Students left the program with Action Plans aimed at decreasing violence in their communities and encouraging their peers to explore alternatives to drugs to be implemented with the assistance of private sector representatives. The program concluded with presentations in Washington, DC with Department of State supporters. At the request of the US embassy in Mexico, Global Seed organized a follow up conference in Mexico. One student stated “It was a life-changing experience and excellent opportunity to grow as a community leader.”
