Y-PLAN China

Bringing Y-PLAN Abroad to Shanghai and Beijing

As one of our first global exchange programs with China, CC+S and Global Seed created a different, unique model by bringing the Y-PLAN leadership studio overseas. At the request of local Chinese educators and industrial leaders, CC+S re-imagined the Y-PLAN educational experience to take place in local schools rather than in California. Ten high school classrooms in Beijing and Shanghai, China, hosted local Y-PLAN Teacher Training Institutes in the summer of 2017. CC+S trained the teachers and walked their students through the Y-PLAN roadmap using local streets and locally identified challenges to learn the methodology.

After their training, Y-PLAN China certified teachers then implemented Y-PLAN with hundreds of their students back home. Y-PLAN China students all worked on projects concerning climate change, with a particular focus on improving recycling and waste management in their schools and stopping industrial waste dumping in their communities. Many of the students’ proposals featured a mix of immediate actions that they could take, like distributing recycling bins at high traffic areas, and actions that required collaboration with other stakeholders, including working with tech giants like WeChat and Weibo to spread awareness of recycling best practices.
